WoW: Forever's New Two-Name System Brings Naming Options and Beta Bugs
Blizzard detailed a new two-part naming system for World of Warcraft: Forever, giving every character a first and second name that together must be unique within a region rather than tied to a single realm. The change supports the game's realmless design but has coincided with beta bugs affecting mail delivery and character logins.
A First and Second Name, Unique by Region
Blizzard's official post explains that in World of Warcraft: Forever, characters get a first name and a second (surname-style) name, together forming a full name unique within a region instead of a single realm. Two characters can share a first name as long as their complete two-name combination differs. Players can hide their secondary name in the game world via Options > Nameplates > "My Secondary Name", though it still appears in chat. Blizzard frames this as expanding choice, letting groups like guilds share a themed second name, such as multiple characters sharing "Brightvale."
Naming Rules and an Early Reservation Window
Blizzard says standard naming code-of-conduct rules still apply, and its system can evaluate both name parts together, so splitting a restricted word across the two names won't make it valid. Separately, Wowhead reported that Blizzard said players using offensive names may lose Beta access entirely. Blizzard confirmed Early Name Reservation will run from October 27 to November 3, 2026 for eligible upgrade purchases, reserving names first-come, first-served ahead of the November 4, 2026 launch; desired names still can't be guaranteed.
Beta Issues Linked to the New Name System
Wowhead reported that the realmless feature and new first/last name structure have caused mail-routing problems in the Forever beta. Separately, on Blizzard's official forums, community manager Kaivax responded to widespread reports of players locked out of characters with a "Character with that name already exists" error, asking affected players to share their character name and last successful play time to aid log searches. On September 22, 2026, Kaivax said a Senior Game Producer planned to restart Beta realms that day while Blizzard gathered information on the issue and its fix.
